Program dates: March-August
Location: Hybrid (three days per week on-site (Tu-Thurs) in our NYC office with one day remote). Company laptop will be provided for the duration of the program.
Weekly schedule: 28 hours per week, 9:00am-5:00pm, with a one-hour lunch break.
 
Pay rate: $17.00/hour
 
As an HBG Editorial Intern at Union Square & Co., you will have the opportunity to work closely with highly creative and teamwork-oriented professionals and gain hands-on professional experience as you own day-to-day tasks, help with special projects, and attend departmental meetings.  
 
To enhance your work experience, we offer educational sessions featuring speakers from all departments of the company as well as networking and career development opportunities.
It would be ideal to have a candidate interested in the editorial work of an imprint that works on a wide range of books and non-book items across the Children’s and Adult departments. The candidate should be able to work in a deadline-oriented environment and juggle multiple tasks at one time. Required knowledge of the Office suite of programs.

  • Creative, curious, and unafraid to ask questions
  • Interested in exploring a career in book publishing
  • Self-starter with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Enthusiastic and excited about discussing recent books you’ve read
  • A keen interest in illustrated, visual, and lifestyle books (i.e., picture books, graphic novels, cookbooks, design books, etc.)
  • Possess a great attitude and a desire to learn as well as excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and contribute insights
  • Resourceful with the ability to balance multiple responsibilities, work independently, and in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Must be results driven, and take appropriate steps to achieve goals while taking ownership of situations as needed
  • Proficient in the MS Office Suite, including Word and Excel
  • Familiarity with Powerpoint, Adobe Acrobat, and InDesign is a plus
 
What you will learn:
  • Log, review, and draft feedback on manuscript submissions
  • Research industry and entertainment trends with goal of creating resource documents for the editorial team
  • Understand an illustrated book schedule and aspects of the production process
  • Understand how Editorial works with a variety of different departments daily, including Managing Editorial, Design, etc., to create books
  • Assist with mailings and events as requested
  • Draft feedback to be used in editorial letters
  • General administrative duties
